Saxon Hall in 28mm

Saxon Hall... You can`t create a Saxon village without the local Thegn`s Hall. Now, I have to admit that in the construction it got away from me a bit. On reflection, it`s a bit big. However, let´s just assume that the local Lord is like modern Mayors and  wanted something to reflect his own sense of importance. So, the size of it will stand until I build another of more moderate dimensions....  Construction. Once again, I followed my tried and trusted construction method of building a house-shaped box. As usual. mounting card was used and was glued together using my glue guns. I then thought about the kind of construction I wanted. Initially it was going to be stone but I´m not that happy with Saxon stonework (at least at the moment). So, once again, a mixture of overlapping boards and plasterwork. In this case I used very thin balsa wood. Firstly, I `seperated`the side walls using thin dowel rod. Following this I cut out planks and laid them (from the bottom up) using PVA woodglue to

A Recent Project. Late Saxon Church....

For several months now, i`ve been working on a SAGA  Late-Saxon game board. I`ve created several buildings including a stable, various dwellings and the Hall of the local lord. However, a week or two ago, I decided that the Inch-High need a place of spiritual comfort and the unwashed from the North need somewhere to loot so I set about building a simple church. Now, before I go into the details of the construction, it`s perhaps worth considering the nature of Late Saxon architecture.  Whilst they were competent enough working with wood and their steel was of a high quality, working in stone was not really their strong point. There is strong evidence that much of their construction was on top of existing structures (i.e. Roman). So, with this build I wanted to reflect this... The Build. I began by mapping out, on squared graph paper, the form and angles of the building. I marked in where the windows and door would be. My Opening Ramble....

 Welcome  to my blog. This untidy mess will (very broadly) be about 28mm Figures, Terrain for Wargaming, a ramble through the techniques I use, materials and paint and personal views about various topics in the world of tabletop gaming. A little about myself. I`ve been a modeller for more years than I care to remember. Principally armour in 1/35th scale although i`ve done quite a number of aircraft in various scales. A few years ago, I discovered the joys (really?) of 28mm figures in a variety of historical periods. At the beginning it was Perry Miniatures then Victrix and now my interested is concentrated mainly on Early Medieval. En route, I have played a bit of Saga , Swordpoint , the occasional RPG and now beginning to focus on systems such as Never Mind the Billhooks and anything `Skirmish`.
